The Laborers Are Few
By Wilma Hendrick

Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few; (Matt 9:37)

"A waving field of golden grain invites many reapers and demands haste. By the reference to the harvest here, he meant that the multitude of people that flocked to his ministry was great. The people expected the Messiah. They were prepared to receive the gospel; but the laborers were few. He directed them, therefore, to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send forth reapers. God is the proprietor of the great harvest of the world, and he only can send people to gather it in."  (from Barnes' Notes)

And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none. (Ezek 22:30)

Then the LORD saw it, and it displeased Him That there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, And wondered that there was no intercessor; (Isa 59:15-16)

He felt such sadness when he looked out over Jerusalem.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; (Matt. 23:37)

So God sent His only precious Son. He came and lived among us and taught us how to live , how to be compassionate, kind, loving and forgiving. He is our intercessor, our Redeemer, the Lamb of God who was sacrificed for our sins on the cruel tree. Jesus gave us the great plan of salvation. We are to show this plan to others.

Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work. Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! (John 4:34-36)

Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away. For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. (Heb 2:1-3)

Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, while it is said: (Heb 3:12-15)

Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. (Heb 3:8)

Dear gentle reader, Let it not be said of us that we will not go into the fields and labor to bring in the lost. Let us please the loving Savior, who gave His all for us. He is not willing that any should perish. Let us labor while it is yet day. Let us pray for laborers to go with us. May the Lord bless us as we go in His name.
Into our hands the gospel is given

Into our hands is given the light,

Haste, let us carry God's precious message,

Guiding the erring back to the right.
